Holidays
Equatorial Guinea's have holidays both similar and different to those in other countries. Due to the fact that 93% of Equatoguineans are Christian, they celebrate holidays such as Good Friday, Easter, and Christmas. Other holidays that are similar are New Year's and Labor Day. A holiday unique to Equatorial Guinea is Golpe de Libertad, or Freedom Coup. This is held on August 3rd every year, in celebration of the overthrowing of President Francisco Macias Nguema in 1979. Every year, Equatoguineans parade around the capital, being lead by the President's motorcade and guards on motorcycles and on foot. Following the motorcycles are singers, dancers, guitarists, drummers, and lucifers. Lucifers are dancers dressed in leopard skin clothing, tennis shoes, and looping horns. In addition, they also have streamers, pompons, 7 rear-view mirrors taped to their neck, and pillows stuffed in their pants.
