Despite the discovery of oil in Equatorial Guinea, the country's economy is still poor. Most of the income from oil reserves goes towards funding the president's extravagant lifestyle, leaving very little money to take most Equatoguineans out of poverty. The remaining money goes towards strengthen international standing. Equatorial Guinea has held the African Cup and has built a new multimillion dollar city, all for the purpose of international standing. The lack of funding going towards Equatoguineans has caused many health and education concerns in the country. Around two thirds of Equatoguineans are living on less than 1 US dollar a day. Because of their lack of income, many children are lacking in nourishment and having major health defects, including a lack of physical growth. The lack of money is also impacting the enrollment in primary and secondary education. Equatorial Guinea's government makes education an inferiority, and spends less than almost any other country in the region. This has resulted in fewer than 60% of children completing primary school, and very few going on to secondary education.
